A Community’s Farewell: From Dollhouse Dreams to Devastation in Tampa

Tucked away in the heart of Toronto, the beloved ‘Leslieville Dollhouse’ has become a symbol of neighborhood pride, attracting curious visitors for decades. Recently, the new owners of this iconic residence decided to give back to the community by hosting a heartwarming giveaway of the house’s cherished dolls and stuffed animals. As gratitude flowed from the crowd gathered outside, they couldn’t help but reflect on the history of the quaint home, which features distinct decorations that have delighted both children and adults alike for the last 20 years.

“We wanted to give people an opportunity to come out and have one last look at it, take a piece home, and go from there,” said Bradley Sutherland, one of the proud new owners.

A Home with a Heart

The cherished dollhouse, located near Queen Street and Jones Avenue, was previously owned by Shirley Sumaisar, who filled her property with a delightful collection of trinkets over her 50 years of residency. Her son Tom shared the bittersweet news that the family had decided to sell the home to focus on Shirley’s health and proximity to family.

“This is my mom’s life…She’s very upset that she’s going to leave, but it’s for her health and to be safer and closer to family,” Tom explained, revealing the emotional weight of the sale.

While Sutherland and his partner plan to renovate the semi-detached, three-bedroom home, they understood the value of the beloved ornaments that dotted the lawn for so long. Partnering with MLSE’s Change the Game campaign, they organized the giveaway as a charitable event, asking guests to make a donation to help youth in the city.

“It’s a great organization that helps youth in the city, and this home has brought so much joy to youth in the city, so we thought it would be a great alignment to give back,” Sutherland added.

A Time of Celebration Amidst Storm Devastation

As the community came together to celebrate the dollhouse and its legacy, events unfurled in another part of the United States that would leave people grappling with tremendous loss. As Hurricane Helene battered Tampa Bay, the storm’s wrath manifested grimly in the rising death toll.

Patricia Mikos, an 80-year-old resident, perished tragically when she re-entered her flooded unit to retrieve belongings, only to become trapped as water overwhelmed her home. “The storm was worse to the region from a casualty and devastation standpoint than most could remember,” Pinellas County officials stated, urging residents to heed evacuation orders.

Sharon Murphy, who evacuated with her granddaughter, reflected on her need to leave her home during this storm, stating, “You never know.”

With no report of deaths in Pasco County yet, the local Sheriff’s Office continues in its recovery and rescue efforts to aid those affected.
