Britain’s First Gnome Amnesty: Turning Garden Ornaments into Charity Fundraisers
In a heartwarming initiative, the village of Hilgay in West Norfolk has pioneered Britain’s first garden gnome amnesty program. The innovative scheme allows locals to part ways with unwanted garden ornaments, which are then upcycled and sold to raise funds for charitable causes.
Residents of Hilgay have embraced the opportunity to declutter their gardens while contributing to a noble cause. The mastermind behind this creative endeavor is Ali Dent, a 65-year-old resident who, along with his young grandson, refurbishes the donated gnomes for resale in support of Norfolk Hospice.
Ali Dent shared his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I must have well over 50 now. They can take a while to do but that does vary. My grandson’s been coming along to give me a hand. You’ve just got to get the right colors, that’s the important thing.”

The response from the community has been overwhelming, with one individual already contributing 25 gnomes to the cause. Ali Dent’s dedication to the project is evident, as he continues to receive and refurbish the ornaments, creating a colorful array outside his residence.
To date, Ali Dent has raised over £120,000 for various charities, including the Stroke Association and Multiple Sclerosis Society. His outstanding contributions to the community were recognized in 2006 when he was awarded an MBE for his philanthropic efforts.
The refurbished gnomes, along with donated books, will be available for purchase on October 22, with all proceeds going towards supporting Norfolk Hospice’s vital work.
