Honoring the Fallen Heroes of Chicago’s 8th District
In a heartfelt tribute, a new statue was unveiled on Sunday, paying homage to the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The statue, a colorful depiction of a police K-9, sits proudly atop the front desk of the Chicago Lawn (8th) District station, adorned with images of three fallen heroes: Sgt. Ed Dougherty, Officer Ella French, and Officer Andres Vasquez Lasso.
“May this Canine remind all of the dedication and sacrifice made each day, by the 008th District Police Officers, who patrol, risk, and serve the citizens of Chicago Lawn, and the City of Chicago.”
Officer French, assigned to the Chicago Lawn District, tragically lost her life in the line of duty in August 2021. Sgt. Dougherty, who spent the majority of his 24 years on the force at the Chicago Lawn District, sadly took his own life last year. Officer Vasquez Lasso, also assigned to the Chicago Lawn District, was shot and killed in the line of duty in March 2023.
A symbol of dedication and sacrifice
The statue serves as a poignant reminder of the risks and sacrifices made by the men and women in blue, who selflessly serve and protect the citizens of Chicago. It is a testament to the bravery and dedication of those who have given their lives in the line of duty.
A badge of honor
As we remember the fallen heroes of the 8th District, we are reminded of the importance of honoring their memory and continuing their legacy of service and sacrifice.
A city united
The statue is a powerful symbol of the bond between the police and the community they serve. It is a beacon of hope and a reminder that their sacrifices will never be forgotten.
A symbol of loyalty and protection
As we move forward, let us continue to honor the memories of Sgt. Dougherty, Officer French, and Officer Vasquez Lasso, and all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. May their bravery and dedication inspire us to strive for a safer, more united Chicago.
