According to Stewart McLaurin, the president of the White House Historical Association, this replica will evolve with every new president, ensuring that each guest experiences the current décor.

Visitors can not only observe but also interact in this iconic space. “A terrific aspect of the replica is that you can actually sit in the President’s chair,” McLaurin noted during a preview tour.

In a setting where few ever step foot, the replica offers an exclusive taste of presidential life:

“You can take a call from Mr. Putin or anybody you’d like to receive a call from, have your photo taken there,” he adds, reminding visitors that this is a chance to connect with history in a way that feels personal.

The Oval Office experience is complemented by an Immersive Theater, which dynamically transforms every five minutes to showcase various historical rooms like the East Room and the State Dining Room. Within these spaces, guests can engage with the art and furniture through interactive touch screens that illuminate the rich history behind each piece.

Engaging with History

As visitors traverse the education center, they are treated to a wealth of historical insights. Exhibits detail how the White House functions in various capacities—be it as a workplace, venue for social gatherings, or as a familial residence. This includes the opportunity for guests to participate in a simulated Cabinet meeting or take their seat at a table set for a state dinner.

“Leaving the theater, visitors will walk to the replica Oval Office along a stone path resembling the White House colonnade with a view of art made to represent the Rose Garden,” McLaurin detailed about the journey through the center.

This blend of technology and education aims to make American presidential history accessible and engaging, especially for those who have not had the privilege to tour the actual White House.

Educational Outreach

First Lady Jill Biden, who visited the center twice during its construction, emphasizes the importance of this new venture. “This new immersive education center will take visitors on an incredible journey using technology and innovation to bring White House history to life,” she stated.

Admission to the center is free, but guests are encouraged to reserve timed tickets to manage daily attendance. The objective is to welcome around 800 visitors each day, with most tours lasting just over an hour.

With an impressive $60 million raised for construction and a $50 million endowment planned for ongoing operations, it’s clear that the White House Historical Association is committed to providing a depth of understanding about the Executive Mansion.

A Celebration of History

The association was established in 1961 by Jacqueline Kennedy, aiming to preserve the aesthetic integrity of the White House and to educate the public. Despite being a nonprofit organization that does not receive government funding, it remains committed to offering quality experiences that inspire and educate.
