The Great Ape Heist: Thieves Make Off with Beloved Garden Centre Gorilla
In a bizarre incident, a gang of thieves has stolen an eight-foot fibreglass gorilla statue from a Lanarkshire garden centre, leaving the owner devastated. The statue, named Gary, was taken from Reynard Nursery in Carluke between 11:30 pm on Sunday and 12:30 am on Monday.
Gary’s home, now empty
Gary’s owner, Andrew Scott, has issued a humorous appeal for the safe return of the statue, which he purchased for £3,000 around a decade ago. In a video posted to social media, Scott described Gary as an ape of few words but one that brought joy to customers and staff alike.
Gary, dressed up for a special occasion
Staff at the garden centre frequently dress Gary to match current affairs. When monkey pox hit the headlines, Gary was covered in red spots. Despite his grumpy demeanour and cataracts in his eyes, Gary wouldn’t hurt a fly. He even has distinct scarring from a previous monkey pox infection.

Police Scotland confirmed that officers received a report of the theft of the gorilla statue from outside the centre on Mauldslie Road at around 8:35 am on Monday. Enquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible. Anyone with information should call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 0588 of Monday, March 20, 2023.
Police Scotland are investigating the theft
The theft of Gary has left the community in shock, and his owner is desperate for his safe return. If you have any information, please come forward and help bring Gary back home.
