The Scrap Heap Next Door: A Community’s Growing Concern

Residents in a tidy cul-de-sac have found themselves grappling with an unsightly problem emanating from a neighbor’s garden, prompting worries about pests, safety, and property values. Where once there were tended roses and manicured lawns, a mountain of junk now dominates the view, creating an image more akin to a scrapyard than a serene neighborhood.

Time for a car boot sale? The cluttered garden has become a source of distress for many neighbors.

Next-door neighbor Dominique Mangan, a mother of two, took action by erecting a five-foot fence that cost her £1,000, hoping to shield her family from the unsightly view. Unfortunately, the piles of discarded items seem to tower ever higher, rendering her efforts futile. “Rats are out in broad daylight, and I’m constantly yelling at the kids to shut the door," Dominique lamented. “If you look out of the bedroom window, you can see them scurrying around the waste. I’ve had environmental health out loads. My anxiety is through the roof, and my heart pounds just thinking about it.”

The overflowing piles of suitcases, bicycles, furniture, toys, and other junk stretch beyond the property line, spreading chaos across Gleave Crescent in Croxteth. One resident remarked, “It’s an eyesore. And it’s getting worse, not better.” The situation, they claim, began about four years ago and has only escalated since.

A Rise in Neighborhood Tensions

Another resident pulled up Google Street View from 2022 to illustrate the stark change in the area. What was once a picturesque street has now transformed into a cluttered vista of neglect. “It just seems to have worsened over time,” shared a spouse of a distressed resident. A couple living directly across the street said they noticed the disarray soon after moving in, noting, “It was already like that when we moved in. But it has definitely gotten worse in the last couple of months.” They often see the property’s owner arriving with a van loaded to the brim with more items.

There’s not much space to mow the lawn here Neighbors express their frustrations over the state of the property.

Concerns are mounting among homeowners about the impact of this growing junkyard on their property prices. “If you tried to sell a house and someone comes to look around, it’ll put them right off,” one neighbor commented. “It brings down the value of the houses here, that’s for sure. It’s an embarrassment.” Another agreed, stating the situation has become a nightmare for local residents, particularly since visitors frequently comment on the odd sight.

Health Hazards and Fire Risks

The issue isn’t merely cosmetic. Neighbors have reported finding dead rats near their property, leading them to suspect the filth next door is a contributing factor. One resident shared, “He found a dead rat underneath his car on the driveway. He’s convinced it’s linked to the mess over there. We can’t risk putting poison down because we’ve got a dog.” With Bonfire Night approaching, fears of fire risks associated with the amassed junk are intensifying. “If anyone puts a match to that, it’ll go up like that—it’s serious,” worried a nearby resident. “We had the fire brigade come last year over it—particularly about the cars and vans. It needs sorting.”

A representative from the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service noted that their prevention team visited the problematic property earlier this year, providing fire safety advice and discussing risks associated with the accumulation of materials. They have been actively working with the family and collaborating with partner organizations to alleviate the ongoing issue.

Council’s Role in the Resolution

Liverpool City Council has acknowledged the situation, stating that there is an ongoing investigation regarding the complaints from residents. They assured that communication will be maintained with affected residents. However, despite the rising frustrations and complaints from the community, the property owner has remained unresponsive, succinctly stating, “no comment” when approached by locals.

Neighbours are worried it could bring down house prices Community members are anxious about the future of their neighborhood.

As the junk continues to pile up and concerns grow about the potential health and safety issues, residents are left hoping that the situation will be resolved soon. The feeling of being trapped in a community overrun by neglect weighs heavy on the minds of these Gleave Crescent residents.
